Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What's the easiest way to subscribe to your service?
A:  When the last of the hardware is installed this week, we will schedule an engineer to come and do frequency and signal strength tests. We would like to be sure we have a strong and reliable signal before we start hooking up customers. This should only take a couple more weeks unless we run into a big snag.

Q:  How can I tell if I get service from my house?
A:  We have several broadcast locations, and we add new locations each month. Please refer to the Service Areas button and find the tower closest to your home. If you live within 10 miles of the tower, we can likely connect you to our service.

Q:  What if I sign-up but your installer learns I can't get a signal from my house?
A:  We will refund all your money and charge nothing for the visit. We will only keep your subscription if we can supply you with a robust connection.

Q:  How do I make SMW my ISP for ZIPP?
A:  All you need to do is notify Grant County PUD that you would like to make a change in your Zipp provider, and give them the name of Saddle Mountain Wireless. The technical work happens behind the scenes. If you would like progress updates please feel free to call our Systems Administrator, at 509.932.5088

Q:  Is the wireless system secure?
A:  Yes. We provide standard DES encryption, as well as proprietary over-the-air encryption designed by Motorola. Using a Universal Subscriber Gateway at our main facility, we have the ability to screen computers not acknowledged by our system as subscribers.

Q:  Is the wireless signal dangerous?
A:  No, the signal is carried on microwaves. Once received by your dish at your home, the signal is transported to your computer via CAT 5 cable to your Network card.

Q:  What equipment will I need to use the wireless?
A:  In most cases, a receiving dish and a module hooked to the dish will gather the signal from the tower. We will wire a CAT 5 computer cable from your dish into the room for your computer. A standard patch cord will connect the cable from the power supply to the Network card in your computer. There is no more equipment required for the standard connection.

Q:  Can I install my own equipment and save money?
A:  You can install the equipment yourself if you wish, but we will still charge the standard $49.95 fee for up to an hour of installation time. The installation will still include signal testing as well as testing the cables and the robustness of your computer.

Q:  Can I rent the equipment from you?
A:  Yes, the rental fee is $49.95 per month, and includes the connection speed of 128k.

Q:  Can I send and receive faxes on your wireless system?
A:  Yes. You will need a service such as efax (www.efax.com) which will utilize our wireless system for faxing through the Internet.

Q:  Is there a firewall to keep people out of my computer?
A:  Yes. Not only a firewall, but also an encrypted signal from the tower to your home and the tower to our facility.

Q:  Why should I subscribe to your wireless service?
A:  The wireless service allows you to be connected to the Internet 24/7. This allows you access without a telephone line, saving the expense of an extra line or the headache of lines in use. The best feature is that our basic service is likely 10 times faster than what you get with a dial-up connection.

Q:  What if I subscribe to the wireless, then Zipp comes to my house?
A:  If Zipp comes to your home after you purchase our equipment, we will buy back your equipment minus a small amount when you designate SMW as your Zipp ISP. You get the best of both worlds.

Q:  What is Nomadix?
A:  It is the name of the universal subscriber gateway. It keeps track of who logs into our system and keeps unknown users out. It is one of our three levels of security.

Q:  How do I get past the Nomadix screen?
A:  When you subscribed to our service, you gave us a username and password. Enter them in the appropriate fields on the Nomadix screen, and you will be on your way.

Q:  How to I receive my email from a remote location or someone else’s computer?
A:  Web based email is now accessible from the home page or you can go directly to http://webmail.smwireless.net:3000 Type in your full email address and password. You will then have access to your e-mail.

Q:  My internet is not working?
A:  If you have a router, reboot it by unplugging the power then plugging it back in. If you don’t have a router, try to reboot you computer, but make sure the power supply to our radio is plugged in and the green light is on. If you have a power strip make sure it is plugged in and turned on. If you have done all of this and you still don’t have internet, please call Tech Support.

Q:  When I try to enter my user name and password in the Nomadix screen, the screen flickers? I can’t type in my user name or password.
A:  Hit your stop button in Internet Explorer then click on Tools > Internet Options then click on Delete Files and then Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet files. Close Internet Explorer and open it again. This time it should let you enter your username and password.

Q:  What are my email settings?
A:  We use a POP3 server. The incoming and outgoing mail settings are: mail.smwireless.net
