What is Fiber
Optics?
Fiber optics is the science of transmitting data, voice and images by the
passage of light through thin, transparent fibers. These
fibers virtually eliminate copper wire in long-distance
telephone lines, and it is used to link computers within
local area networks.
What is the necessary equipment?
CAT-5 cable wired for network
A network card (CAT-5 cable must be run from the PUD's
box to the network card in your computer).
Once I sign up for service, what happens before I can
get connected?
Indicate Saddle Mountain Wireless as your ISP on GCPUD ZIPP Application.
Send in your signed and completed application.
GCPUD crews attach a "gateway box" to your home, near
you electric meter.
This box connects your home's wiring to our fiber
network.
The crews string fiber optic cable from the pole into
the gateway enclosure, and then attach it into the
gateway.
The fiber is then spliced at the pole, and then spliced
at the fiber "hub," which is the central fiber
connection point for a neighborhood.
The technicians "light" the fiber, turning on the laser
and configuring our connection equipment to connect you
to the Zipp Network.
(After you are "lit," then you are ready to begin
receiving services over the Zipp Network.)
